Alberto Cairo

Alberto Cairo can be described as a pioneer in integrated aid on the ground. Here in Kabul is the “Kabul Orthopedic Center” – one of the first centers supervised by the ICRC and Alberto Cairo. In his more than 20 years of work, six other rehabilitation centers have been established throughout Afghanistan. Alberto employs about 400 people. Most of them are locals and more than 80% of them are handicapped people!

Herat

Physical Rehabilitation Center (PRC)

Soudeh had her first experience with the center as a young child with polio. The work at the center fascinated her – her career goal: physical therapist.

“I saw all the physical therapists who worked here and helped the handicapped people. That’s what I wanted to be! I turned to Alberto Cairo. He got me a place to study in Kabul. After three years, I returned to the rehabilitation center in Herat.”

Thanks to the donations, people like Soudeh have the chance of an education. One more physiotherapist to help return victims and the handicapped to everyday life.

Lashkar Gah

Physical Rehabilitation Centre (PRC)

Shamsullah, 14 years old. In 2015 he lost both legs in a landmine explosion. After receiving surgical treatment, he was referred to the ICRC Physical Rehabilitation Center. Here, in addition to the two prosthetic legs, he received an intensive rehabilitation program with walking and exercise training. Today he walks with two prosthetic legs and the support of crutches.

Shamsullah has a single goal – he wants to work for the ICRC. He attends both private and public school. Today he masters the way in between without outside help – and is proud of it.

Battambang

Physical Rehabilitation Centre (PRC)

Battambang is one of the largest PRC’s with integrated prosthesis and wheelchair production in Cambodia. From here, about 50% of the mine victims nationwide are cared for.

• Fitting of the prosthesis by trained orthopedists
• Rehabilitation with walking and movement training
• Integration of the victims into everyday life

Battambang

Micro Economic Initiative (MEI)

Ngou suffered severe leg injuries from a landmine accident. Since then, she has been dependent on a wheelchair or her tuk tuk.

• Her husband earns $3 a day as a day laborer when he has work.
• Ngou applies for a microcredit to operate a coffee tuk tuk.
• The loan has long since been repaid. Today, the entrepreneur and her husband turn over between $300 to $500 a month. Since coffee sales have declined because of Starbucks, Ngou now additionally sells sandwiches for lunch.

Thanks to the donations, Ngou has made the start to an everyday life of independence!
